چکیده

-Eastern cottonwood clones originating from 36 young natural stands along the Mississippi River from Memphis, Tennessee, to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, were evaluated in a nursery near Greenville, Mississippi for resi~tance to Melampsora rust. In general, the northern sources had more rust and were more variable in rust susceptibility than the southern sources. Eleven percent of the clones from the 6 northernmost sources and 0.5 percent of the clones from the 24 southernmost sources appeared to be highly resistant to rust. Clones with slightly less rust resistance wer.e about evenly distributed over the geographic range. Additional keywords: Populus deltoides, Melampsora medusae.

Abundant Pathogenic Variation in the New Hybrid Rust Melampsora xcolumbiana on Hybrid Poplar.

ABSTRACT The recently described rust hybrid Melampsora xcolumbiana was discovered as a result of its novel pathogenic variation on Populus trichocarpa x P. deltoides (TxD) hybrid poplar. To characterize this pathogenic variation, 10 commercial TxD clones, all F(1) clones, were chosen as host differentials. Fourteen mononuredinial isolates of Pacific Northwestern field collections of M. xcolumbi...

Disking Effects on Fifth-year Volume Production of Four Eastern Cottonwood Clones Established on an Afforestation Site, Sharkey County, Mississippi

In spring 1995, an eastern cottonwood (Populus delfoides) plantation was established on a former agricultural field in Sharkey County, MS to evaluate the effects of clonal variety and mechanical weed control on aboveground biomass production. Four cottonwood clones, ST-66, ST-72, ST-75 and S7C-1 were planted on a 12 foot x 12 foot spacing and subjected to 2 mechanical weed control treatments (d...

Genetic Variation Among Open-Pollinated Progeny of Eastern Cottonwood

Open-pollinated seed was collected in 1963 from 81 trees in natural stands along the Mississippi River between Clarkscfale and Vicksburg, Mississippi. Twenty-nine of the trees were chosen for outstanding growth and form; the remaining 52 were randomly selected. Seeds were cleaned, then stored at 38° F and 25 percent relative humidity until sown on August 5. They were sown in subirrigated plant ...

An Afforestation System for Restoring Bottomland Hardwood Forests: Biomass Accumulation of Nuttall Oak Seedlings Interplanted Beneath Eastern Cottonwood

Bottomland hardwood forests of the southeastern United States have declined in extent since European settlement. Forest restoration activities over the past decade, however, have driven recent changes in land use through an intensified afforestation effort on former agricultural land. This intense afforestation effort, particularly in the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley, has generated a deman...

Crossing Eastern Cottonwood

Ea~,tern cottonwood (Populus deltoides Bartr.) is the subject of breeding programs designed to develop planting stock with potential for rapid growth, desirable wood properties, and pest resistance (4). Techniques for making controlled crosses within the species are essential to breeding, and their development constitutes an early phase of genetics research. This paper will describe techniques ...
